What Is a Dental Crown?

When a tooth cracks or experiences other severe damage, its structural integrity can become compromised. This leads to an increased risk of cavities and gum disease, and also makes the tooth more vulnerable to further harm. So, to protect your child’s pearly white and provide some much-needed support, we’ll place a customized, tooth-colored cap over it for 360-degree coverage. Since Dr. Ben is an internationally recognized expert in zirconia crowns, you can trust that your child will receive a high-quality restoration that will blend in seamlessly with their other teeth!

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

A dental crown treatment is actually a two-step process. During your child’s first appointment, we’ll assess their needs, make any necessary alterations to their tooth (this allows the crown to fit snugly and comfortably), take dental impressions, then finally provide them with a temporary crown.

The purpose of a temporary crown is to protect the vulnerable tooth while our trusted partners at the dental lab customize the final product. This typically takes two to three weeks, but could take less time because zirconia is easier to work with than other materials. Once our team receives your child’s permanent crown from the lab, we’ll be able to replace the temporary version during a second appointment.

Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

There are many benefits to getting a zirconia crown in Garland, including:

  • Tooth-colored, natural appearance – you won’t be able to tell the difference between their crown and real teeth!
  • Superior strength – these crowns are temperature-resistant and even more durable than their traditional metal counterparts.
  • Quick customization and treatment – your child can enjoy their complete, healthy smile soon after their visit.

Dental Crowns FAQs

Are Dental Crowns Permanent?

No, dental crowns are not technically permanent. However, if your child takes good care of their restoration, it may last for 10 – 15 years or longer before it needs to be replaced. For example, you should monitor their oral hygiene habits and encourage them to avoid biting down on hard objects that might damage their crown.

If your child receives a crown for one of their primary (baby) teeth, it will likely last until the tooth is ready to fall out on its own.

Do Dental Crowns Get Cavities?

Dental crowns are made of very different materials than natural tooth enamel, so they are not vulnerable to cavities. However, the tooth beneath a crown is still able to develop spots of decay. That can happen if the crown is damaged or insecure on the tooth; food particles might sneak beneath it and start to eat away at the underlying dental structure. In some cases, harmful bacteria may also sneak beneath the gumline and cause damage to the root of a tooth, which is not covered by a crown.

Thorough oral hygiene, regular dental checkups, and other basic best practices can greatly reduce the risk of harm to the tooth under a crown.

Does It Hurt to Get a Dental Crown?

We want our patients to be comfortable, so we always numb the teeth we are preparing for crowns. We also offer sedation options for kids who are nervous, sensitive, or who have special needs. Your child should feel little to nothing during the crown preparation process.

After the crown is in place (whether it is temporary or permanent), your child might experience increased dental sensitivity and soreness for a short time. This discomfort usually wears off within a few days or weeks.

Are Dental Crowns Safe?

Yes, dental crowns are very safe. Here are some key points to consider:

  • We use zirconia crowns, which are known to be biocompatible (they work well within the human body).
  • We are very careful throughout the crown process to minimize the risk of complications related to human error.
  • A crown protects the underlying tooth and is much more likely to prevent problems than cause them.

If you believe your child is having a bad reaction to their crown, call us right away. We will evaluate the situation and strive to resolve it as quickly and comfortably as possible.

Do Dental Crowns Feel Natural?

We carefully design crowns so they fit in with each patient’s natural bite. After a brief adjustment period, your child’s crown should feel very comfortable and natural in their mouth; they may even stop noticing that it is there!

If the crown causes ongoing discomfort, that might mean it does not fit properly or there is a problem with the way it was made. We can assess the issue and strive to remedy it, perhaps through modifying the crown or replacing it altogether.
