Giving Your Child A Head Start on Smiling
Although infants’ smiles are much different than ours, they still require just as much, if not more, diligent care. As the teeth come in, not only do they need to be healthy – the mouth in which they’re inhabiting also needs to be in great shape. Dr. Ben and our team here at Garland Pediatric Dentistry know just how much good can be done for a child by getting a head start on their dental hygiene, and with their help, your baby’s smile will grow into a beautiful, confidence-inspiring grin they can carry with them all throughout life.

Why Should I Bring My Baby to the Dentist’s Office?

Bringing your baby to see Dr. Ben and our team early on in their life helps to establish a rock-solid foundation for healthy dental habits, setting their smile up for a bright and problem-free future. Early checkups help us monitor tooth development and prevent dental issues like decay and gum disease (which can indiscriminately affect children). These visits also let us begin acclimating your child to the dental office, making them less likely to suffer from dental-related anxiety as they get older and become more involved with their dental hygiene.
When Should My Baby First Go to the Dentist’s Office?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that parents bring their child to their first dental appointment no later than their first birthday, or as soon as their first teeth begin erupting. Dr. Ben and our team couldn’t agree more – the sooner you bring in your child, the sooner we can begin keeping tabs on their dental development and ensure that they aren’t subject to issues that affect their smile and their livelihood!
What Happens During Baby’s First Dental Checkup

The main purpose of your baby’s first dental checkup is twofold; we want to ensure that their dental development is on-schedule and problem-free, while also easing them into what dental treatment entails and ensuring that they’re comfortable within the dental setting. Once you’ve arrived here at our office, we’ll begin by greeting you and your child before bringing both of you back to meet Dr. Ben. He’ll perform a gentle yet thorough examination of your little one’s mouth and face, carefully noting different features and charting the progress of their dental development.
He’ll also ask you questions and in turn, answer any that you might have about your infant’s developing smile and how to best care for it. Our office is colorful, quiet, and kid-friendly, meaning that throughout the visit, your child should feel relaxed and at ease, which also helps them become used to the ebb and flow of dental visits and some of the sights and sounds they’ll experience at the office. By the end of the visit, Dr. Ben will have a very detailed assessment of your child’s smile and specific needs, which will allow him to provide the best possible care moving forward as the teeth begin arriving and their needs start evolving.
