Toddler Teeth Development

The first stage of tooth development, known as teething, can be uncomfortable for toddlers. It often begins around six months of age and causes varying discomfort in addition to sore gums, drooling, and general irritability. Most often the first teeth to come in are the ones in the middle of the mouth, and from this point on, teeth will continue to grow, often one to two every month. By the time they turn 3 years old, most or all of their 20 baby teeth should have arrived.
What is Teething?

Teething is a natural process in which infants experience discomfort as their first set of teeth emerges through the gums. This typically begins around six months of age and then lasts until age 3 or so, and symptoms may include irritability, drooling, swollen gums, and a desire to chew on objects. While teething can be uncomfortable, it’s an important milestone in your child’s development. You can help soothe the discomfort caused by teething with at-home remedies like gentle gum massages, teething rings, or cold washcloth compresses.
How to Clean Your Toddler’s Teeth and Gums

Cleaning your toddler’s teeth and gums is key to starting healthy habits early; however, toddlers are often too young to brush and floss as effectively as the rest of us. Fortunately, you can assist them; begin by wiping their gums with a soft, damp washcloth before their teeth come in. Once their first tooth arrives, you can switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush designed for infants, coupled with a tiny smear of toothpaste. Gently brush twice a day, especially before bedtime, and monitor their teeth as they erupt. Don’t hesitate to let our team know if you have any questions about your child’s smile or how to best care for it at home.
